What is Lymphoedema?

Lymphoedema is a chronic condition that causes swelling due to a build-up of lymphatic fluid in the body’s tissues. It most commonly affects the arms or legs but can also occur in the trunk, head and neck, or genital area. Lymphoedema may develop after cancer treatment, surgery, radiation, trauma, infection, or due to a congenital (primary) condition.

While lymphoedema is a long-term condition, early assessment and appropriate management can significantly reduce swelling, improve comfort and function, and help prevent complications such as infection and skin changes.
