Dizzy? There Is Almost Always Something That Can Be Done!

A man with migraines holds her hand by his nose in the bed.

Feeling dizzy, unsteady, or “off balance” can be frustrating – especially when it starts affecting your confidence, movement, or even simple daily tasks. The good news is that in most cases, dizziness is treatable, and with the right assessment, the right exercises, and the right guidance, people of all ages (especially older adults) can get meaningful relief.

That’s where Vestibular Rehabilitation comes in.

Vestibular Rehabilitation is a specialised form of therapy that focuses on retraining your balance system – the delicate network in the inner ear, eyes, and body that keeps you steady and oriented. When something isn’t working the way it should, the brain can receive confusing signals. This can lead to spinning, unsteadiness, motion-triggered dizziness, blurry vision with movement, or a constant sense of feeling “not quite right.”

A thorough vestibular assessment allows us to identify whether the cause is related to your inner ear, your brain’s ability to process balance signals, your neck, or even how your body responds to certain environments. Using Frenzel Goggles, we can examine your eye movements in detail – these goggles help us see tiny patterns that often point to the underlying issue.

Once we know what’s happening, we create a written, tailored exercise plan after every session, so you know exactly what to do at home. Therapy may include balance retraining, gaze-stabilisation exercises, motion sensitivity reduction, or specific head-movement retraining. Even rare conditions involving motion after travel or persistent rocking sensations – which many people are told to “just live with” – often respond to the right kind of targeted exercise.

One of the most reassuring parts of Vestibular Rehabilitation is this: The brain is adaptable. Even when the vestibular system has been damaged or isn’t functioning normally, improvement is still possible. Many people regain stability, confidence, and the ability to move without fear.

If dizziness has been stopping you from living the life you want, don’t ignore it. There is almost always a pathway forward – and often, it begins with a simple assessment. Our Vestibular Physiotherapist, Elano, has completed additional training to do with dizziness, imbalance, vertigo, and all there is to do with the vestibular system. If you have any concerns with your inner ear, he can likely put you on a path for success with reduction of symptoms. Book now, as the sooner it’s sorted, the better!
